Is Travel Insurance Worth the Big Bucks?

There’s insurance for everything out there. Whatever you could imagine, there is an insurance to cover all bases and keep any invested interests safe. When it comes to travel insurance, it’s the first thing that people scrimp out on when they’re protecting themselves.

Why? Because people don’t think that anything bad happens to them on holiday. But it does, it comes out of nowhere and can be a real mess to sort out if you haven’t got travel insurance.

We’re not trying to put you off travelling, but here are some of the few things that can happen while you’re travelling that you will need insurance to cover!

Transport Accidents

Traffic collisions are one of the leading causes of death in the world, accounting for 3% of global deaths. Why wouldn’t it happen while you were travelling? Case in point, Potroff & Karlin, train accident specialist lawyers, deal with hundreds of cases every year where trains have derailed and passengers are now having to seek to recover damages from the train company themselves, rather than going through their insurance.

Aside from that, a lot of young people on gap years like to travel around east Asia on mopeds or small scooters, completely ignoring the fact that motorbike and two-wheel collisions have the highest death rates in accidents.

Extreme Sport Mix Ups

This follows on down the danger route, but it’s a given that extreme sports carry certain risks. No matter what you’re doing, whether it be quad biking, white water rafting, bungee jumping, or anything else, you’re activities carry an inherent risk of injury.

Plan ahead and get travel insurance so getting dealt with in the hospital isn’t as much of a headache.

Lost Luggage

Accidents happen, airlines make mistakes and, on occasion, personal belongings get on the wrong flight and fly all the way to somewhere where you aren’t.

Nearly all travel insurance policies cover lost luggage and will offer monetary compensation for items lost. If your bags are only a few days behind you, either the airline or your travel insurance will reimburse you, the traveller, for any costs incurred due to the lack of luggage.

Sickness

When you travel to another country, you are warned not to drink the water. This is because your body isn’t used to whatever bacteria is native to that country. You can avoid it all you want, but food is washed in it, you brush your teeth with it and I’m betting you have ice cubes in your drink as well.

All of this can contribute to a very dodgy stomach. I won’t go into the finer details, but it can really put a dampener on your trip.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to get a bit of money back through your travel insurance company for your terrible time in the toilet.

The cost of travel insurance isn’t even really that much when you get down to it. Depending on your destination, it can be as little as £5 for a 9 day break!
